Poem for Baby Winger

Posted on August 31, 2024 by leanewinger

Known

Unknown one, you are known.
Your tiny body, perfect
Just the way it was,
Your form knit together
Only this much.
Welcomed
Straight into loving arms.

Unknown one, you are known.
Little though you may be,
The love surrounding you
Was very big.
Your story became shorter,
It didn’t end.

Unknown one, you are known.
No less mysterious
Than uncounted wonders;
Unknown by us, yet known.
Precious in the simple gift of being.
Held close by the maker of the universe.
Loved. Precious. Known.

Your Will Be Done In Me

Your Will Be Done In Me

Song by Leane Winger

Lyrics:

Good news from an angel, the saviour is coming,

But her world is turned upside down.

The hope of her people, foretold through the ages.

But not quite what they counted on.

It’s joy to the world but for her she’s not certain

The scandal in which she must live.

Despite all the questions, the fear and the wonder,

There’s only one answer to give:

Your will be done,

However hard and lonely it might seem.

Your will be done

On the road you have for me.

When doubts arise and hope is lost,

When it comes time to count the cost,

I lay my way down at your feet.

Your will be done in me.

He kneels in the garden, he knows it is coming,

The reason he came on that night.

Disciples are sleeping, the dark growing deeper,

Betrayal is just out of sight.

Oh please take this cup, now his voice rings in anguish.

He could choose to not pay the price.

With sweat drops of blood and a heart full of sorrow

He looks to the father and cries:

Your will be done,

However dark and painful it might be.

Your will be done

On the road to Calvary.

The agony that is in store

Brings hope to many, many more.

I lay my way down at your feet.

Your will be done in me.

So in every moment we look to our saviour

With those who believe in his name.

Like those gone before us, we find the Lord’s favour

Can lead to a difficult way.

But we know that this pain will last just for a moment.

The joy set before us is sure.

We cling to the love of our God who is faithful

And the glorious hope that we share.

Your will be done.

Someday some glorious day I’ll finally see.

Your will be done,

What you have done in me.

I stand at last before your throne

And know this life is not my own.

Now and forever may it be.

Your will be done in me.

No one goes to the Dark Lands.

Ever since the Great War, the Dark Lands have been a desolate and dangerous waste, haunted by monsters. Every Elf knows that.

But Larsya—the home of the Elves—is a place full of wisdom and culture, and most importantly, safely isolated from all that lurks beyond the sea. As the niece of the Chancellor, young Thea has grown up with everything she could want … until a strange visitor from the Dark Lands ignites Thea’s awakening abilities and leads her to the unsettling realization that the Elves are not as safe they seem, and the war may not be over after all.

For Nan

Posted on May 2, 2022 by leanewinger

For Nan

“So far away.”
I hold your hand,
Soon to be gone
Across this land.

“So far away.”
I know, but I
Promise my heart
Is by your side.

Your tired eyes
how much they’ve seen,
The cares and pain
Of what has been—
A world at war,
Your sweetheart’s life,
Your daughter’s final
Cancer fight.
You’ve said goodbye
So many times,
I wish I wasn’t
Adding mine.

I see the signs
Of life so long,
A crumbling frame
Holds your will so strong.
A clever mind
Now trapped within,
Hands worked so hard
Now worn and thin.
I hold you close
For our goodbyes.
You’re fading now
Before my eyes.

“So far away.”
You’re going too,
But someday I’ll
Be there with you.

“So far away.
I miss you so.”
My heart can only say,
I know.

Easter Eve

Posted on April 16, 2022 by leanewinger

Easter Eve

“Tomorrow is Easter Eve!” my five-year-old declared. It was Good Friday and I was explaining to him that it was only two days until Easter. I had to stop and consider his words for a moment. Of course, it was true. The day before Easter would be Easter Eve, but Easter Eve was a term I’d never considered before. The day between Good Friday and Easter has been called “Holy Saturday” by some, but it doesn’t generally get much attention, compared to its surrounding days.

For myself, when I think about that day, it is defined by the events of Good Friday. Jesus was dead, the disciples had fled for their lives, and their hopes for a saving messiah were shattered. That doesn’t sound like an “eve”.

The thing about “eves” is that to celebrate them, you have to know what is happening next. The disciples didn’t realize that Jesus was going to rise from the dead. Jesus had told them, but they hadn’t understood. On that dark Saturday, they didn’t know that it was Easter Eve. It seemed like the end.

And I am encouraged. Because you see, when things are tough, when everything is going wrong and I feel overwhelmed, it can seem like the darkness will never end. It can feel hopeless. But you never know what God is going to do tomorrow. It just might be Easter Eve!

The truth is that we know the end of the story. We know that Jesus is coming back! He will make all things new and wipe the tears from every eye. Who knows—it just might be Easter Eve!

So whatever life is like for you today, joy or sorrow, laughter or pain, I pray that you will look forward in anticipation to all that God is going to do, in your life and in our world. Easter is coming, and Jesus is coming soon!

Happy Easter Eve!

Between Winter and Spring

Posted on March 28, 2022 by leanewinger

Between Winter and Spring

Dirty snow

Disintegrates

Fragmented leaves

Trampled underfoot

All is dark and dead

Birdsong floats

Through skeletal leaves

Stirrings deep underfoot

Carry the promise

There is still more than meets the eye

You cannot see it yet

As the world takes its breath

Like your soul inhabiting

The space between winter and spring

All may seem dead

But look closer

Beyond sight

The swelling bud

Has something else to say

Feel life stir deep inside

The song within you

Is not over yet

Let the sunlight warm your heart

It’s time to come alive

New Year

Posted on December 31, 2021March 28, 2022 by leanewinger

2021 in Review

What a year it has been! In 2021 I took the plunge to receive independent support from my patrons through my website rather than on Patreon. I finished writing my first novel, The Door, which was published in September 2021. My beautiful collection of poetry and photography Through Grief: An Anthology was published in November. I have shared poetry and free devotional resources on my blog throughout the year, and written a significant portion of the first draft of a new adventure trilogy based in an original fantasy world!

In 2022 I look forward to continuing to work on my new trilogy and will be releasing the new tabletop RPG system that my husband and I have been developing. There will be more poetry and devotional resources, and I’m sure more opportunities and ideas will come to light as the year moves forward!

It’s been a joy to grow as an author over the past year, and I look forward to sharing more with you in the year to come!

Christmas

Posted on December 24, 2021 by leanewinger

Christmas

Welcome home, little one

The paint is cracked and peeled

Cold wind blows through the window gap

So pull the blankets tight.

Welcome home, little one

Announced by labour pains and angels

Stained with your mother’s blood and tears

Newborn cries piercing the night.

Welcome home, little one

This world made by your hand

Cracked and broken through years of pain

Still waiting for your touch.

Welcome home, little one

So small and helpless in our arms

Creator and created embracing once again

Welcome home.
